Best Peking Duck In Singapore

The epitome of any Chinese feast and something that sets a good Chinese restaurant apart from a great one is the iconic Peking duck. A treat for the whole family, this delightful dish is loved for its crackly skin and tender meat that overwhelms the palate—in a good way of course.

Complete with the addition of hoisin sauce, sliced cucumbers and scallions before being wrapped in a thin crepe, Peking ducks that are well executed always boasts a delightful crunch on the first bite, followed by an addictive tenderness and flavour which takes your palate to a magical place. It’s no wonder this dish is regarded as China’s national dish.

Given its culinary complexity, not all Chinese restaurants serve Peking duck, but if you know where to look, then enjoying this dish on a regular basis need not be so hard. Here is our list of the best Peking duck restaurants in Singapore.

Hua Ting Peking Duck Collage

#1 HUA TING

New to Hua Ting’s menu is their ambrosial Smoked Peking Duck infused with Aged Pu-Erh served with Yuzu Sauce (S$45++/half).

This aromatic rendition is taken a notch higher than your average Peking duck with the infusion of fragrant pu-erh tea leaves that, aside from perfuming the meat as it cooks, add another layer of flavour that might intrigue the palate at first, but no doubt tastes brilliant.

#4 SI CHUAN DOU HUA

As one of our favourite Chinese restaurants in town, Si Chuan Dou Hua at PARKROYAL On Kitchener Road is where you can find top-notch grub that always impresses.

Each of its three outlets boasts a different menu to cater to specific clientele but the one at Kitchener sees a relatively stronger dedication to Sichuan and Cantonese dishes and is the one we flock to for better than ordinary Peking Roast Duck (S$ 40 for half, S$70 for whole).

TungLok XiHe

#5 TUNGLOK XIHÉ PEKING DUCK

Peking duck (S$66++/whole) is serious business at TungLok XiHé Peking Duck Restaurant—if its name wasn’t already enough of an indication. The restaurant sources a very specific breed all the way from Ireland, one that is specially aged to produce dense and porous skin along with the succulent meat.

Cured in a mix of spices and seasoned before being hung to roast in a traditional oven, the end result is always a perfectly roasted duck. Unlike your typical Peking duck, theirs is highlighted with a unique blueberry sauce and pop rocks dip, giving a whole new meaning to culinary innovation.

#6 YÀN

Boasting an authentic Cantonese menu and a prime rooftop location that allows for a scenic view of the city, Yàn at the National Gallery Singapore is the perfect spot for Cantonese fine dining in Singapore.

Cooking up a visual storm backed by 20 years of experience, Chef Chan Kung Lai astounds with his masterful culinary prowess that can be seen in the way he designs his dishes from his ingredient choices right down to the way he presents them. We find their Peking roast duck (S$90++/whole) impressive in the sense that it was classically prepared devoid of any modern flavour touches—that seems to be the trend in many Chinese restaurants these days.

Wan He Lou – Famous Lobster Porridge & Classic Chinese Dishes

Wan He Lou

Wan He Lou is a traditional Chinese restaurant along Maude Road that is well known for its popular Lobster Porridge and myriad of classic Chinese dishes.

It is the kind of restaurant that will gain instant approval from your grandmother for its cosy ambience, comforting Chinese food that will never go wrong and attentive service from the friendly wait staff.

When it comes to Chinese restaurants in Singapore that evoke nostalgia, Wan He Lou is an established brand that always seeks to deliver.Wan He Lou Interior

The warm lighting, Chinese lanterns, portrait photographs and round communal tables remind us of how a typical Chinese household used to look like in the past. It may be far from fancy, but the intimate, homey vibes play a huge part in getting loyal patrons to visit them time and time again.

Wan He Lou Lobster Porridge

Wan He Lou’s signature is undoubtedly their Lobster Porridge (S$31.90++ onwards), which also happens to be the pride of the restaurant’s award-winning founder chef, Lau Siaw Dee.

Cooked in Teochew style, the Lobster Porridge is a winning recipe and its success all boils down to its flavourful stock which comprises rich lobster roe and topped off with a fresh lobster that was prepared separately.

Wan He Lou Truffle Pork Chops

Tuck into the Truffle Pork Chops (small – S$19.90++, big – S$34.90++) should you be looking for something more substantial. Using Kurobuta pork, the tender chunks of meat came with truffle sauce that gave the pork chops an umami flavour explosion in our mouths.

Wan He Lou Lotus Root

Meanwhile, this sinful plate of Crispy Lotus with Salted Egg (small – S$11.90, medium – S$19.90) is worth breaking your diet for. The paper-thin lotus roots are beyond addictive; covered in a layer of golden salted egg yolk powder and accompanied by fragrant curry leaves.

Jinji Steamboat Group Shot

Teochew Traditional Steamboat Restaurant is a no-frills and utterly unpretentious steamboat restaurant along Joo Chiat Road that stands out against all other places not just for the affordability of its food, but also the authenticity and marvellous quality of the Teochew fare. They stick to the tried-and-proven methods of keeping things simple, with a myriad of dishes suitable for casual dining and gatherings

You know that this is the real deal you step into the restaurant and see countless photos of celebrities who have dined at the restaurant plastering the wall. The owner has travelled to and worked in various countries to pick up the skills needed to execute each dish perfectly, so as to ensure that only the most authentic and best-grade dishes are brought to the table.

Teochew Traditional Steamboat Restaurant is a clear hit amongst the older generations and it is definitely one that young adults alike should hit up for a wholesome, communal meal.

From now until 31 Oct 2018, quote ‘ladyironchef’ to enjoy these promotions (for customers who dine in only) upon making reservations:

- 30% off all steamboat orders (excluding seafood and beef) during lunch daily (not available on Mondays and public holidays).
- Free-flow live drunken prawns for every steamboat order during dinner from Mondays to Fridays (not available during weekends and public holidays). Do note that this is available while stocks last for the day.

Jinji Collage 1

EVERYTHING IS MADE FROM SCRATCH

From their fragrant steamboat broth to the fish paste noodles and bouncy fish balls, the folks behind the restaurant pride themselves on having almost everything handmade, bringing you only the freshest and nothing less.

Even the chilli is a star in its own rights. You have to try every single dip for your steamboat; they are made fresh in-house daily!

Jinji Steamboat Group Shot

STEAMBOAT IS THE WAY TO GO

The star and centrepiece of this restaurant is definitely their steamboat. Every table should order a steamboat for sharing, on top of all the a la carte dishes that you may wish to add on.

Their signature soup base is a best described as a labour of love—the chefs prepare and wash the necessary bones and carcasses before adding them into a giant pot with their speciality ingredient—shark cartillage—then have them all boiled for over 5 hours daily.

The result is a creamy collagen-rich broth that is both savoury and sweet, and highly addictive. Even though we were stuffed by the end of the meal, we couldn’t help but have one last bowl of soup before leaving.

Prices start from just S$10 for 2 to 4 people, with a plethora of ingredients to choose and help yourself to.

Jinji Silver Pomfret

FRESH SILVER POMFRET

You can look forward to a variety of seafood dishes to elevate your steamboat experience. The Silver Pomfret (seasonal price), in particular, is set to impress with its freshness. Afterall, what is Teochew cuisine without a good pomfret, right?

Wild-caught from Surabaya—which is known to have the best quality and sweetest Chinese Pomfret around—you can tell how fresh it is right from the moment your teeth sink into the white flesh that is soft yet firm at the same time.

We are telling you that quantities are limited so if you’re in luck, you have to go for it because it is worthy of the splurge.

Jinji Drunken Prawns

DRUNKEN PRAWNS

The Drunken Prawns (S$8/100g) is something you cannot miss out on. Fresh prawns are intoxicated with Chinese wine and herbs, allowing the wine’s flavour to permeate throughout the body, intensifying the natural sweetness of every single prawn.

As mentioned, do not forget to flash this advertorial upon sitting down for steamboat during dinner hours. From Mondays to Fridays, every table with a steamboat order will enjoy free-flow drunken prawns. You are in for a real treat, guys.

Jinji Handmade Dishes Collage

HOME-MADE FISH PASTE AND FISH BALLS

Handmade from scratch, the fish balls are a must to order—everything from the mixing of ingredients to the shaping of the fish balls are prepared by hand without taking the easy way out.

You can literally taste the difference when you bite into these bouncy delights and it is amazing how they managed to conceal the fishy odour without compromising on the taste.

Another dish you must make sure to order up would be Teochew Traditional Steamboat Restaurant’s signature squid paste fillet—made using 99% fish paste and 1% vegetables and chestnuts without the use of flour at all, you know that what you get here is undoubtedly the real deal.

Jinji Steamboat Beef

VARIETY OF PREMIUM MEATS

No steamboat is ever complete without meats. Teochew Traditional Steamboat Restaurant offers an array of high-quality meats that are imported from USA and Brazil—while it did not particularly blow our minds, these meats are definitely not something that we would decline.

Here you can choose from meat including USA Prime Beef (S$12 per portion), Pork Belly (S$9 per portion) and Fresh Chicken (S$8 per portion).

Jinji Alacarte Items Group Shot

CLASSIC A LA CARTE TEOCHEW DISHES

Steamboat just ain’t enough when dining at Teochew Traditional Steamboat Restaurant. We suggest you save some space for some of Jinji’s equally delectable array of Teochew a la carte dishes.

The a la carte items do not come packaged with fancy accessories nor over-the-top creations but the simplicity of it is precisely why we love their Teochew fare. Here are some of the sumptuous dishes you can expect at Teochew Traditional Steamboat Restaurant.

Jinji Pork Knuckle

PORK KNUCKLE

Should you be looking for something more indulgent, the Pork Knuckle (S$30) will go highly recommended. Boy, this dish checks all the boxes for what a good pork knuckle should taste like.

Upon your first bite, be prepared to be impressed by the crisp texture of the crackling skin before digging into tender and succulent pork meat.

Jinji Chicken

TRADITIONAL SALTED CHICKEN

The Traditional Salted Chicken (S$18) may be light in seasoning but that itself is enough to leave us satisfied. There is nothing fancy going on in this dish but every piece of chicken is extremely flavourful, making this a simple but hearty dish that we’d return for.

Jinji Deep Fried Prawn

GOLDEN PRAWNS

Teochew Traditional Steamboat Restaurant isn’t afraid to boast the variety of cooking methods that they have which can transform a seemingly simple seafood into a myriad of dishes.

The Golden Prawns (S$30) is one of the many prawn dishes that they offer. Despite being heavily coated in a crisp and golden layer of flour, it was surprisingly light in flavour and that only served to accentuate the flavour of the prawns.

Jinji Vegetables

JADE KAI LAN

Who would have thought that a vegetable dish would excite the entire table of diners? Well, the Jade Kai Lan (S$12) was one that we wiped out within minutes.

We thought that kai lan is best enjoyed when stir-fried, but this dish proved us wrong. Stir-fried kai lan is hidden below a stack of deep-fried pieces of the same vegetable, bringing you a textural variety that is nothing short of impressive. The latter reminds us of crispy kale!

Jinji Pork Floss Egg Plant

BRINJAL WITH PORK FLOSS

The Brinjal with Pork Floss (S$12) may be a fairly straightforward item on the menu but it is still a remarkable one at that.

Deep-fried brinjal pieces are covered with a generous amount of pork floss, curry leaves and chilli; this dish is a winner. The different textures made it a delightful side dish to munch on and it will forever change your impression of brinjal.

Jinji Salted Egg Pumpkin

GOLDEN PUMPKIN

The Golden Pumpkin is essentially deep-fried pumpkin slices doused in a rich and piquant salted egg sauce that will have salted egg yolk fans swooning in no time.

12 Incredible Fried Rice In Singapore That We Wish Home Economics Taught Us

fried rice compilation

Fried rice is comfort food for the soul. Period. Who can resist a steaming plate of that fragrant goodness? However, despite it being one of the simplest dishes to put together, it takes a great deal of skill for one to be able to create the perfect dish of fried rice.

And what do we mean by that? Some basic criteria we have would be that the dish cannot be too oily, the rice has to be fluffy and charred just right, and there has to be the right balance of ingredients and rice.

While homemade versions will get you by, they most certainly aren’t memorable. Here, we have a list of our top 12 places that sell incredible fried rice in Singapore that we wish home economics class taught us back in school.

Baan Ying Pork Belly Fried Rice With Salted Egg

BAAN YING

Harnessing the salty and distinct flavour profiles salted egg, Baan Ying has managed to take regular fried rice and transform it into something totally mind-blowing. Their Pork Belly Fried Rice With Salted Egg strikes the perfect balance of flavours, textures and has a prominent note of wok hei.

We love how the salted egg yolk chunks were embedded evenly in the rice allowing every bite to fill your mouth with generous bits of salted egg. That’s not all, aside from the masterfully prepared fried rice, the crispy chunks of pork belly were pretty darn delicious as well.

Crystal-Jade-Fried-Rice

CRYSTAL JADE LA MIAN XIAO LONG BAO

Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao is a place that most, if not all Singaporeans are familiar with. Their signature dishes, just as their name states, are xiao long bao and la mian. However, we discovered that they serve pretty solid fried rice here as well!

The portion size of their fried rice (S$10.80) is pretty generous, with one plate being enough to feed two people generously. The fried rice has bits of prawn, chicken and ham embedded in it, which added lots of flavour to the rice.

Din Tai Fung boasts one of the most delicious fried rice in Singapore, hands down. We don’t know how they do it, but there is something magical about their fried rice recipe that keeps us coming back for more!

Every one of Din Tai Fung’s fried rice dishes consists of their very basic egg fried rice. They always manage to keep their rice light and fluffy without it losing its amazing taste and fragrance. Their basic egg fried rice is a favourite, and their pork chop fried rice is great too, but our absolute favourite has to be their shrimp fried rice.

Imperial Treasure Nan Bei is a great place to go to for some solid Chinese cuisine, and one of their more popular dishes here is their Fried Rice with BBQ Pork & Shrimp in Yang Zhou Style.

Their fried rice is incredibly colourful and is speckled with yummy ingredients such as cubes of char siew, shrimp and green onion. The rice is fluffy and is not too oily. Due to the myriad of ingredients used in creating this dish, the rice is well flavoured and very savoury. You can eat a whole plate of it on your own!

Paradise Dynasty Fried Rice

PARADISE DYNASTY LEGEND OF XIAO LONG BAO

Paradise Dynasty’s simple plate of Shanghai Fried Rice may not look much, but we promise you that it tastes much better than it looks.

The overall dish was surprisingly much lighter than we thought it was, and it was not too oily or salty. Each grain of plump rice is generously and evenly coated with egg, and the rice had a good mix of meat bits in it, giving it great texture and flavour.

Each grain of rice is evenly coated with egg, and the texture of the rice is incredibly fluffy and fragrant. Their plump, juicy prawns add a great touch to the dish, as well as give the dish a nice seafood flavour—did we mention they’re open 24-hours too?

tampopo truffle black fried rice

TAMPOPO

Tampopo is one of our go-to places for great Japanese food, and one of our favourites has to be their Black Pig Truffle Fried Rice.

The rice is generously and evenly coated in black, murky truffle, making the dish look slightly unappealing. However, just a whiff of that aromatic truffle will have your mouth watering. The truffle here also really complements the pork bits really well, creating an overall incredibly appetising dish that will make you want to come back for more.

COLBAR

Offering a full-on menu of both Asian and Western fare, Colbar is one of the few gems in Singapore that we can safely say, has truly stood the test of time. Yet, we are firm believers that the best dim sum should not only be yummy, but affordable too. Tang Tea House is a halal dim sum eatery at Simpang Bedok known for their budget-friendly scrumptious dishes.

Tang Tea House Coffee Bun

The Coffee Buns (S$3.40/3 pcs) were up first; from afar, we could already smell the mouth-watering aroma of coffee. The soft bun tore apart easily, oozing thick coffee paste; the gooey filling melted in our mouths with a bold coffee scent that lingered on our palates. The paste wasn’t cloyingly sweet as well.

We thought it was a novel twist to run-of-the-mill lotus or red bean paste; we can safely say this coffee dish was our favourite!

Tang Tea House Hong Kong Style Egg Tarts

Next, we tried the Hong-Kong Style Egg Tarts (S$4.20/3 pcs). The crust was crispy and flaky with a biscuit-like texture. The wobbly goodness was also soft and slightly sweet in the middle without an overpowering taste of butter. It was a pastry done well, unlike other egg tarts that tend to be overly crumbly.

Tang Tea House Steamed Rice Roll with BBQ Chicken

We would recommend trying the Steamed Rice Roll with BBQ Chicken (S$4.20/1 plate) too. The skin of the rice roll was Q and thick enough to hold a substantial amount of chicken filling. Paired with the sweet soy sauce, the piquant dish had a hint of tanginess. The chilli also gave the dish an extra kick of spice.

Tang Tea House Deep-Fried Shrimps Dumping with Mayonnaise

The Deep-Fried Shrimps Dumping with Mayonnaise (S$4.70/3 pcs) was incredibly crispy and the meat to skin ratio was just right. It had a generous amount of filling, with oozing meat and prawn. Dipped into the mayo, the toothsome dumpling was an explosion of sweet and savoury flavour.

Tang Tea House Steamed Chicken Dumpling

Out of the lot, the Steamed Chicken Dumpling (S$4.70/4 pcs) was our least favourite. The skin was slightly doughy, and the chicken stuffing a tad bit mushy. We would have preferred if the skin was thinner and the chicken had more bite. The filling lacked seasoning as well, and the vinegar sauce overpowered the dumpling’s taste.

Chatterbox

Established in in 1971 at the former Mandarin Singapore (now known as Hilton Singapore Orchard), Chatterbox is a Singaporean institution known for their legendary Mandarin Chicken Rice.

Chatterbox has recently reopened after a major renovation and it has transformed from a coffee house in a 5-star hotel to the go-to dining destination for top-notch local food in a beautiful space which is suitable for all occasions.

Chatterbox Interior

Chatterbox Interior Bar

Regulars to Chatterbox will be pleasantly surprised by the new beautiful interior which is totally different from the old Chatterbox.

Chatterbox Executive Chef Liew Tian Heong

Executive Chef Liew Tian Heong has been with the restaurant for over three decades and he and his team have done an excellent job with the menu.

Chatterbox Mackeral & Crab Otah-Otah

Chatterbox Sea Perch with burnt chilli
Sea Perch with Burnt Green Chilli

Other than retaining the signature dishes that Chatterbox is known for, they have also added many new dishes—including BBQ King Prawns, Mackeral & Crab Otah-Otah, Sea Perch with Burnt Green Chilli—to the menu that are worth trying.

Chatterbox Mandarin Chicken Rice

Nobody comes to Chatterbox without ordering the legendary Mandarin Chicken Rice which comes with tender-boiled free-range chicken that is so juicy and succulent. They have reduced the prices slightly and an individual portion of chicken rice is priced at S$25. You can also order a Half Chicken (S$38) and Whole Chicken (S$72) for sharing.

Chatterbox Hokkien Prawn Noodle

If we could only pick one dish (other than the chicken rice), it would be the Seafood Hokkien Mee. Executive Chef Liew uses additional lobster shells to boil the broth (on top of prawn shells) and the result is a robust and super flavourful broth.

The ‘wet’ Hokkien Mee comes with fresh Ang Kar prawn, squid, scallop and pork belly. This is the best Hokkien Mee you can get from a restaurant.

Chatterbox Bar

Chatterbox Cocktail

The new space also has a gorgeous bar and it has an impressive list of cocktails, wines and drinks that are curated by their new GM, Kelvin Tay (who used to be the GM of The White Rabbit and the Group Sommelier Mentor of The Lo & Behold Group).
